Gentle Leaders and Training

What is a gentle leader?

A gentle leader is a type of head collar commonly used in dog training.  Gentle leaders are usually made from lightweight, nylon material which is soft, yet sturdy enough to remain intact after long periods of use.

Placing a Gentle Leader on Your Dog

One concern that most people have with collars in general, is selecting the appropriate size.  Before buying a gentle leader, it is recommended that it is fitted on your dog first.  As a rule of thumb, one finger should fit in between the strap behind your dog’s ears, and the same goes for the clip that is located under the chin.  While it is being fitted at the store or veterinary clinic, you can also take advantage of this time to ask a professional how the collar should be properly placed.  .

Are Dog Parks Good For My Dog?

Dog parks are great places to get exercise for your dog. One of the best things about them is the ability to let your dog off-leash in a safe environment.  Your dog not only has the ability to enjoy this time with you, but he can play with other dogs as well.  Some parks have kiddy pools to help keep your dog cool in the summer months while others have ponds for those dogs that enjoy a good swim. My Dog Is Escaping, How Do I Stop Him?

Using Toys or Play as Rewards In Training

While this is probably the easiest method for most dog owners,  it can be much more fun to use dog toys and games as rewards. My Dog Is Digging Up My Yard – How Do I Stop It?

Digging DogHow many times have you opened your door to let your dog in and find him in the middle of digging a bunch of holes in your yard, flower bed, or vegetable garden?  This can be an extremely aggravating behavior.
